ESI advises Access Bank Namibia on securing a provisional banking authorisation for entry into the Namibian market

By Jurie Badenhorst

DLA Piper Africa, Namibia (ESI) is proud to announce its role in assisting Access Bank Namibia Limited, a subsidiary of Access Bank PLC, in securing provisional authorisation to establish a banking institution in Namibia.

The provisional authorisation was granted by the Bank of Namibia on 02 October 2024. It allows Access Bank Namibia Limited a six-month period to meet specific requirements before applying for a final banking license.

Our dedicated team, led by Jurie Badenhorst and Meyer van den Berg and supported by Diana Vivo and Dehan van Zyl, provided comprehensive legal services throughout the application process for Access Bank's provisional authorisation. Our assistance included setting up Access Bank Namibia Limited, drafting constitutional documents, advising on regulatory compliance, facilitating negotiations between shareholders, engaging with the Bank of Namibia, and preparing the necessary application materials.

This milestone marks a significant step forward for Access Bank, Africa’s largest bank by customer base, as it expands into the growing Namibian market. The move underscores the bank’s commitment to broadening financial access and fostering intra-African trade.

ESI is proud to have contributed to this important development in Namibia’s financial sector.
