DLA Piper Africa, Namibia (ESI) successfully advises on the acquisition of the ‘Gerus’ 19.31 MWP solar photovoltaic plant in Namibia

ESI contributes to the development of the Namibian energy sector

By Mia Kellerman

DLA Piper Africa, Namibia (ESI) is proud to announce its role as legal advisors to both Solar Century Africa and Sino Energy in the acquisition by Solar Century Africa, of the ‘Gerus’ 19.31 MWP solar photovoltaic plant, near Otjiwarongo, Namibia.

The transaction closed in October 2024, with a prestigious ground-breaking event held on 8 November 2024 at the Gerus Farm, attended by amongst others the honourable minister of Finance and Public Enterprises.

The Gerus solar PV plant is one of the first in the region to be developed and run as a full merchant plant selling its power directly to large customers within Namibia, as well as in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).

Solar Century Africa is one of the leading renewable energy developers in Africa. Headquartered in the United Kingdom, it is a market leader in the development of solar PV and energy storage projects using smart energy technology and controls in sub-Saharan Africa. Solar Century Africa is part of the BB Energy Group, one of the world’s leading independent energy trading companies, with a fast-growing renewable energy and emission reduction division.

Our dedicated team, led by Mia Kellerman and Peter Johns, for Solar Century Africa and Sino Energy, respectively, supported by Rauna Ndilula and Niel Groenewald, advised on all aspects of the transaction, including the provision of comprehensive legal advice on licencing, regulatory compliance, competition and land rights.

ESI is delighted to have contributed to the success of this project, which is an important development in the Namibian energy sector and the single largest investment by the United Kingdom in Namibia, to date.
